Ingredients:
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup red wine
- 1 French baguette, sliced
- 1 cup shredded gruyere cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Step 1: Caramelize the Onions
In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown.
Step 2: Add the Broth and Wine
Pour in the beef broth and red wine. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Step 3: Toast the Baguette
While the soup is simmering, preheat your oven to 375°F. Place the sliced baguette on a baking sheet and toast in the oven until they are golden brown and crispy.
Step 4: Serve the Soup
Ladle the onion soup into bowls and top each one with a couple of slices of toasted baguette. Sprinkle the shredded gruyere cheese on top and place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 5: Enjoy!
Serve the French onion soup hot and enjoy it with a side of crusty bread for dipping. Bon appétit!
