Ingredients:

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • French bread slices
  • Gruyere cheese, grated

Instructions:

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft and golden brown, about 45 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Add garlic and sugar: Stir in minced garlic and sugar, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Pour in broth and wine: Add beef broth, water, and white wine to the pot. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 20-30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  4. Season and serve: Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a French bread slice, and sprinkle with grated Gruyere cheese.
  5. Broil until bubbly: Place bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve hot and enjoy!
