Ingredients:
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 4 cups beef broth
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- Salt and pepper to taste
- French bread slices
- Gruyere cheese, grated
Instructions:
- Caramelize the onions: In a large pot, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft and golden brown, about 45 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
- Add garlic and sugar: Stir in minced garlic and sugar, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
- Pour in broth and wine: Add beef broth, water, and white wine to the pot. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 20-30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Season and serve: Season with salt and pepper to taste. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a French bread slice, and sprinkle with grated Gruyere cheese.
- Broil until bubbly: Place bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve hot and enjoy!
