French Onion Soup Recipe

Ingredients

  • 5 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • French baguette, sliced
  • Gruyere cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and garlic, and cook until caramelized, about 30 minutes.
  3. Pour in the beef broth, red wine, bay leaf, thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the broiler. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls.
  5. Top each bowl with a slice of French baguette and sprinkle with grated Gruyere cheese.
  6. Place the bowls under the broiler until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Serve hot and enjoy!
